waiting for the light to change

Songs for the changing seasons. Songs lifted by rhythms pulled from the winds and from the waves.

Inspired by grooves and colours from the global sound, with glances both back and forwards at this little dance along our singular and common way.

Biography

Rick Takvorian is a singer, songwriter and fingerstyle guitarist who lives just across the Belgian border from Aachen. A native of Worcester, Massachusetts, he ran off to Paris in the late ’70s and has lived, worked and played in Europe ever since. He is a cultural manager, festival director and musician in the borderland of the Euregio Maas-Rhein, which has influenced his across the borders life and work ethic. He is well known, among other things, as the founder of the international schrit_tmacher dance festival and the popular concert series Café Rick.

His music is rhythmic and atmospheric and fused with the sounds and rhythms of West Africa, Brazil and faraway island cultures; it has always played a part in his journey. His percussive, rhythmic acoustic guitar playing and raspy vocal stylings go far back to early, wayward influences such as the great beating guitar player Kono from Cameroon, whose music left its mark on him at an early age. When a song asks for it, he switches to the piano. A quiet whimsy runs through the writing and vocals; listeners have heard echoes of Nick Drake, John Martyn and Cat Stevens.

His recordings include the EP the man who fooled the world (2015) and the album just one moon (2018). His recent recordings, including Imperfect Orpheus (2024), the popular Patipati (2025) and his new album, waiting for the light to change, were arranged and produced with Michael Witte at klanguru.
